A pregnant young mother has been stabbed to death in a "completely random" attack while walking to work.
The victim, who was in her early 20s, was on her own when it appears she was attacked by a man she did not know and stabbed in the back.
A 53-year-old man was arrested in connection with the attack, which happened in Grimsby shortly before 4pm on Sunday.
"The tragic thing about this is that it was completely random," said Det Supt Christine Kelk, of Humberside Police.
"She was walking to work locally on her own at the time.
"It would appear that she's been followed by the man who then stabbed her in the back with a knife."
The officer appealed for witnesses but said it was raining heavily at the time and the area was likely to have been "fairly quiet".
Police cordoned off the area around Victoria Street South in Grimsby where the incident happened while forensics officers examined the scene.
Ms Kelk, who is leading the murder investigation, said it appeared the victim suffered a single stab wound to her back.
A post mortem examination will take place later.
"Some members of the public were nearby at the time. Some tried to give her first aid and some went after the man," she said.
Officers from a passing police van stopped and arrested a 53-year-old man.
The woman, who was from Grimsby, was rushed to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital with serious injuries but died from her injuries.
