Sex Attacker Snared By Newspaper PhotographSky News 2009
A sex offender was traced when he posed for a newspaper photograph after his girlfriend gave birth in a car.
Darren Fletcher, 41, was caught when an eagle-eyed police officer saw the article in a local newspaper in Bournemouth.
Fletcher, who was living in Christchurch, Dorset, was pictured smiling for the camera with his ex-partner and two police officers who helped deliver the baby.
Police in Lancashire wanted to question him over allegations of sexual assault against three girls from the Preston area - two of them sisters.
The abuse took place between March 2005 and January 2008, Preston Crown Court was told.
He indecently touched the two sisters, aged 11 and 13, on several occasions and also sexually assaulted a 14-year-old family friend.
Fletcher denied any wrongdoing and was released on bail but was later arrested in Carlisle for a sexual offence against another 14-year-old girl.
Richard Hunt, prosecuting, said the incidents escalated in seriousness and the latter offence appeared to be the most disturbing, which involved an element of grooming.
Fletcher lay on top of the girl as he assaulted her in a violent incident which lasted up to an hour.
The following the day the teenager took an overdose of painkillers in distress but later recovered.
Fletcher, formerly of Monkswell Green, Christchurch, but now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to 12 counts of indecent assault against children at an earlier hearing.
Philip Curran, defending, said Fletcher had previous convictions but none of a sexual nature and had expressed remorse for the attacks.
He said: "These offences appear to have taken place against a background following the death of his mother. He had been treated for depression."
Fletcher was jailed for a minimum of four years in an indeterminate sentence.
Judge Stuart Baker said: "The affect of your conduct on each of the four victims has been significant."
