Polls Open In European And Local ElectionsVoters across the country are going to the polls today to choose their MEPs and, in the shires, their county councillors.
Britons will elect 72 new Members to the European Parliament, down from the 78 elected in 2004.
It means some parties have already seen their MEP numbers reduced without a vote being cast.
In London, which comprises one of nine European constituencies in England, Labour goes from three to two seats after the readjustment.
In Scotland, where the votes are counted across the entire country, the Conservatives see their seats reduced from three to two.
The results of the European elections will be revealed on Sunday evening.
County council elections are also being held today.
Today's polls mark the first time since 1993 that the local elections are not being held simultaneously with a general one.
There are now just 27 of these councils left - down from the 39 that existed in 1993.
Results of the elections will be announced overnight tonight and tomorrow morning.
