GET ready ladies - New Kids on the Block rolled back into town today, aiming to roll back the years to their 1990s heyday.
The orginal boyband will play the first of their UK comeback gigs here in Manchester at the M.E.N. Arena tomorrow night.
They were due to arrive at the swanky five-star Lowry Hotel this morning to prepare for their first gig in the city since their 1991 gig at the then G-Mex. And I'm sure they'll be hoping for the same sort of ear-splitting reception when they recreate their moves 18 years on.
Fans can expect a high-energy and bold show from the Boston fivesome - Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood and brothers Jordan and Jon Knight, as our photos from the US leg of their tour show.
Heart-throb Jordan says they may not be as wild as they once were, but fans can expect them to give their all.
He says: "We definitely put a lot of energy out there. We are not walking onstage and just living through our past or walking through the steps. We are going for it."
They'll be showcasing songs from their new album, The Block, as well as old favourites like Step By Step and Hangin' Tough.
But we wait to hear whether now they're back, like our very own manband Take That, they'll be back for good.
Take That's creator, Manchester music boss Nigel Martin-Smith is certainly not convinced. He famously decided to create a UK boyband after seeing the success of New Kids.
But Nigel reckons they'll never emulate Manchester's own comeback kings.
He says: "I think it's quite funny that New Kids are coming to Manchester to start their tour, the home of the most popular comeback kids of all - Take That.
"It's strange because everyone thinks I modelled Take That on New Kids, but it was more of a case of I thought that was how not to do it.
"I met New Kids back in the day on one of those Saturday morning TV shows, and I came away thinking how obnoxious, they were rude to people. I remember thinking how massive they had become despite being like that, imagine how well a boyband could do if they were actually respectful and polite? And that's how Take That were and still are to this day.
"I told the lads to go out on top, and then you can always make a comeback because that's how people remember you. That's why Take That's comeback has worked so well.
"With New Kids I don't think they did go out on top and I'm not sure how well this will work."
"In fact," he tells The Diary, "I bet in six months' time they will have gone again."
Blimey! Don't expect to see Nigel boogeying on the front row at the M.E.N. tomorrow night then... |

Yeah on 27th. Lol, we're in Block B (I think cos we've had "THE LETTER" ), not quite sure how we'd find each other but it may be easier than if it was full arena!

Eeep, not "THE LETTER"!! I'm in Block 117, which when you're looking at the stage will be on your right side. I'll be on the front row of that block somewhere lol!
I'll be the one hyperventilating and breathing into a paper bag, or, I'll be the one throwing smexy panties at Jordan, or both!

Yes, THE LETTER, lol! My friend phoned up today, they assured her our seats would be in the same proximity, we were on row 23!
Can you wave the paper bag before you start hyperventilating then we might see you

i have posted a video of games that i filmed at the concert... its in the video section
and this is the review from manchester evening news
| Quote: | WE all love a good comeback - Take That have made sure of that.
But how would the original boyband, the All-American fivesome New Kids on The Block, fare some 15 years since throwing in the sweat-sodden towel?
Would they have the Right Stuff to bring back the good times for all those girly devotees from the 1990s?
Well, passion certainly wasn't lacking from either side at the M.E.N. Arena.
Never have I seen such a starkly unified demographic for a gig - it was eerily like walking into a girls school reunion, and everywhere I looked I thought I recognised someone from my own class of 1990.
The audience was packed with swishly-dressed professional-looking women almost exclusively aged between 25-35, who of course turned into crazed, lust-filled loons when the New Kids bounded out.
The relentless two-hour show starts with dramatic video screens filtering out the words 15 years ago they walked away... but now they're back.
Swagger
And when they swagger onto the stage for slick show opener Single it's like they've never been away.
Perhaps, rather sensibly, they like to be known as The Block these days.
But in fairness, those New Kids haven't changed all that much some 15 years on.
Donnie is still the swaggering, crotch-grabbing hip-hop bad boy, Jordan still the chiselled hunk with the mean falsetto, Joey the bounding "kid" of the gang, Danny still doing a mean breakdance and Jon is still... erm, the quiet and thoughtful one.
In making the comeback, the lads have been quite clear that this isn't just about nostalgia - it's about their new sound too.
But it's quite clearly the memories that bring out the ladies to roll back the years.
Dirty Dancing
That's not to say the "new stuff" from album The Block isn't good, in fact some of it is pretty damn cool. Dirty Dancing works really well when the band emerge in a round stage at the centre of the arena, grooving away with a babeilicious dancer on a piano.
Grown Man, with vocals on a video screen from Pussycat Doll Nicole Sherzinger, is funky and slick.
But it's the old favourites that have the crowds squealing with delight and bouncing around in ecstasy.
My Favorite Girl
And while the New Kids hits may not have made it to pop classic status over the years, the likes of My Favorite Girl, Please Don't Go Girl, You Got It (The Right Stuff) are delivered with gusto to an audience who sang back every word.
Highlights include an arm waving Tonight, a rip-roaring No More Games, and Donnie doing a tongue-in-cheek solo rocking version of Cover Girl.
And who could fail to enjoy an encore of Step By Step and Hangin' Tough - with the lads marching out in their salute to the home crowd in Manchester United shirts.
The band insisted ahead of this comeback that they weren't in it for the money - which is probably just as well seeing as they far from sold out this big comeback night at the M.E.N. Arena, the first night of their European tour.
But those who did make the effort to come to this joyous reunion most certainly got their money's worth from their teen idols. |
