Dog Walker Is Killed By Stampeding Cattle

A dog walker has died after being trampled by a herd of cattle.

The woman is believed to have been walking with her pets on a stretch of the Pennine Way outside the hamlet of Gayle, near Hawes, North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police said she was walking in a field with two dogs, a brown and white spaniel and a collie-type dog, both on their leads, when the sight of the dogs panicked the animals.

A police spokeswoman said: "She was surrounded by a herd of cattle and calves, and as a result of dogs being present the cattle reacted in an aggressive manner."

The woman, who has not been named but was described as being around 5ft 2in tall and of slim build, was fatally injured.

The tragedy happened at lunchtime on Sunday.

Last year Sandra Pearce, 45, died in a cattle stampede as she crossed a field in South Elmham, Suffolk, with her pet dogs.

This should teach people not to walk through a field of cows while walking a dog.

What an awful thing to happen.

Sad!

This both saddens and intrigues me.

It must have been very upsetting for the family of the victim and it is unfortunate of this person's death, but this over-reaction may be useful for the studies of a specialist who is particularly daedal in the areas of psychology (and even more so sociology) of cattle such as the types which we know under the name of cows.

Kindly and Courteously yours,
KindAndCourteous.

Harford vet Liz Crowsley trampled to death by cows in the Yorkshire Dales
4:55pm Tuesday 23rd June 2009

A HARTFORD vet was trampled to death by cows as she walked her dogs on holiday in the Yorkshire Dales.

Liz Crowsley, who was principal vet at The Willows Verterinary Hospital, in Chester Road, was killed by the herd of cattle on a bridleway on the Pennine Way on Sunday.

Police said the cows, some of which had young calves, became agressive at the sight of the 49-year-old’s two dogs, a brown and white spaniel and a border collie.

Simon Jones, a partner at the Willows Veterinary Group, said: “Liz was a highly respected colleague and will be hugely missed by her colleagues, friends and clientele.”

Liz, who is survived by her mother and brother, may have been protecting her dogs, who were found running free and uninjured near her body and are being looked after by a dog warden.

An ambulance was called to the field just before noon on Sunday and Liz, from Warrington, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first person on the scene was a holidaymaker from Lancashire, who was staying in a cottage just yards from the accident.

He said he and his wife heard a strange bellowing sound coming from the field.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "At first we thought nothing of it but then we realised that something was not right.

"I looked outside and saw a herd of cows crowded round one area of the field.

"I knew something was wrong so I went outside, picked up a wooden post which was nearby and went to the cows and shooed them away.

"Then I saw a woman on the ground, with her head bent at an unnatural angle.

“I checked her vital signs but there was no pulse.”

A spokesman for the farming family who own the cows said: "We are very, very sorry its happened "We dont know what happened – it was out of our control.

"There’s thousands of walkers use this route and it’s never happened before."

Sgt Jerry Perrin, of Richmondshire Police, said: “She had two dogs with her and we think the cows were scared by these and trampled her.”

Liz qualified as a vet from the University of Liverpool in 1984 and worked at the Willows Veterinary Group for most of her career, becoming partner in 1991.

She became senior small animal partner for the group in 2002.
