By the end of the evening, the total stood at £57,809,938.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the money raised would make a "real difference".
"I would like to offer my personal congratulations to the whole Comic Relief team for their success in raising a record £57 million yesterday," he said.
"That figure is testament both to their hard work and also to the outstanding generosity of the British people.
Sainsbury's, which sold official Comic Relief merchandise, handed over a cheque for more than £9m - the biggest single donation ever presented in the event's history.
The supermarket reported record sales of red noses this year - up 23% compared with 2007 - with an average of 100,000 noses being bought every day. |

THats a heck of a lot of money, and not bad to say we're supposed to be in the middle of an economic downturn!!!

He was awesome!! I'm quite glad he won, cuz he was really good and he totally went for it.
I have to admit though I voted for Paddy and Keith cuz Keith Lemmon is just sooo funny!!! They were hilarious together!!! They way they kept whispering words of love at eachother and cuddling up, practically ignoring everything else that was going on was just brilliant!!
